Move Over, Its the Law!

Move Over!

Move Over, It's the Law!

To help safeguard law enforcement officers, emergency responders, road maintenance workers, and others who work on the side of highways, Wisconsin has a "Move Over Law."

Drivers must provide a safety zone for stopped law enforcement, emergency and maintenance vehicles.

The law requires drivers to shift lanes or slow down in order to provide a "safety zone" for a squad car, ambulance, fire truck, tow truck or highway maintenance vehicle that is stopped on the side of a road with its warning lights flashing.

Drivers have two options for creating a safety zone:

· If the road has more than one directional lane, like the Interstate, and you can switch lanes safely, you must move over to vacate the lane closest to the law enforcement or other vehicle with its lights flashing.

· If the road has a single directional lane or you can't safely move over, you must reduce your speed.

Failure of motorists to move over is one of the reasons that motor vehicle crashes kill more law enforcement officers on duty than any other cause.

Safety belts save lives and prevent serious injuries.

· Consistent safety belt use is the single most effective way to protect people from being ejected from a vehicle or thrown around violently inside it during a crash and possibly hitting another vehicle occupant with massive force.

· In 2011, of the 336 drivers and passengers who were killed in Wisconsin, more than half were not buckled up.

· Wisconsin’s safety belt use rate is approximately 80%, which is substantially lower than the national average of 86%.

· To increase safety belt use, law enforcement agencies throughout the state will mobilize for the national Click It or Ticket campaign from May 20 to June 2, which includes the heavily-traveled Memorial Day weekend

Safety belts & young motorists

· Traffic crashes are the leading cause of death for teens and young adults nationwide

· On average, a motorist age 19 or under in Wisconsin is killed or injured in a traffic crash every hour and 36 minutes

· Only about 72 percent of drivers ages 16 to 25 buckle up, which is the lowest safety belt use rate of any age group in Wisconsin.

Failure of motorists to move over is one of the reasons that motor vehicle crashes kill more law enforcement officers on duty than any other cause.

Zero in Wisconsin

Wisconsin Zero!

Zero in Wisconsin

More than 500 people died on Wisconsin roads last year.

Some deaths were caused by speeding while others were a result of drunk driving, or not wearing a seat belt. Tragically, these deaths affect many lives and cause great pain to thousands of people throughout the state. Fortunately, you can help change that number.

The Wisconsin Department of Transportation and our traffic safety partners have launched the Zero In Wisconsin campaign to help save lives and reduce the number of traffic deaths annually in Wisconsin.

In Wisconsin, our ZERO VISION means that any preventable traffic death is one too many. By staying within the speed limit, being sober behind the wheel, and buckling up, you can do simple things that can turn more than 500 annual deaths into zero..

Zero in Wisconsin Homepage -- Wisconsin Department of Transportation

Motorcycle Safety starts with 5=Zero

The goal of 5=ZERO is to reduce motorcycle fatalities to zero by promoting and providing options covering the five main areas of motorcycle safety.

On average for the last five years, traffic crashes annually have killed nearly 100 motorcyclists and injured approximately 2,500 in Wisconsin.

Motorcycling is inherently more dangerous than driving a car. Handling characteristics are unique, and rider skills must be at a level capable of safe operation. Yet an overwhelming majority of all riders in Wisconsin have never even taken a basic rider education course.

The keys to reducing fatalities through 5=ZERO include:

  1. Ride Unimpaired
  2. Wear Protective, Conspicuous Gear
  3. Get Trained and Licensed
  4. Use Safe Riding Practices
  5. Inspect and Maintain Your Motorcycle

Remember…Motorcycling is a life-long learning experience!

Distracted Driving Awareness

Wisconsin Zero!

April is Distracted Driving Awareness Month

The National Safety Council (NSC) has designated April as Distracted Driving Awareness month. In 2011, more than 3,000 fatalities resulted from distracted driving crashes, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Distracted driving is not just talking or texting on a cell phone. It can be eating or reading, manipulating controls in car, handheld computers/tablets or other navigation devices, smoking, issues with directions or rubbernecking.
